Talib Kweli in Zürich
Last night Travis and I went to see Talib Kweli at the Rotefabrik on the west side of the Zürichsee. Learning from De La Soul, we arrived a little earlier, just after 9:00. Rotefabrik isn't used solely for a club, the club area is called the Aktionshalle, and there are a lot of other areas to the facility, including picnic tables on the lake. Inside there were some girls breakdancing, and they were really damn good.
DJ Platinum was up playing a set, which turned out really, really good. He played a lot of Mobb Deep and M.O.P., who were both openers for the G-Unit concert the night before. I think he played one G-Unit song too, but that was the lowlight. Although he played a little long, he was a really good opening DJ. They pretty much flowed right into Talib's show, with his people setting up while DJ Platinum still played.
Talib came out and right away you could hear his skill. In the first song, he modified his lyrics to tell the people infront of the stage to stop pushing because of the ladies in the crowd, and it all rhymed. Then when the people didn't stop he cut the music and gave them a quick lecture. Talib is far from gangsta rap. Much more political and sociological.
The crowd was a lot more pumped up than the De La Soul crowd, but the people on the balcony were still quite quiet. At one point Talib called out for all the B-Boys and B-Girls to come up on stage. We were hoping the girls from earlier would go up, but they didn't. A couple girls and a guy went up, but they weren't very good. One did a backflip, and Talib told her people weren't ready for that and to come back next year. Dunno. One of the best songs was 'Lonely People' which is a remix of the Beatles' song 'Eleanor Rigby' and it came out sounding really good. Towards the end a guy who had been sitting on a speaker joined Talib up on stage and security went to drag him out, and Talib added a verse to his rap asking the security not to throw him out. They didn't listen, so he stopped the music again and got them to let go of the guy. Later security tried to throw him out again, but Talib broke it up again. The guy wasn't being violent, just dancing. It was just kindof funny because Travis was telling me in other news DMX had beat up some fans at one of his concert. Polar opposites I guess. There were a few encores, including the DJ showing his skills by seamlessly beat juggling doubles of '99 Problems' by Jay-Z.
After the show we hung around for a bit, but it didn't seem any good so we made the trek back to the Hauptbahnhof and grabbed a night bus home. We stopped at Moonlight Club for a beer. It was my first time there since Kyle was here, and it seems a little weird. Definately an older, classier crowd.
